Wood Goblets

I remember seeing Stuart Mortimer making wood goblets during an exhibition while thinking that maybe I would never be skilled enough as a woodturner to try something so fancy.

Fellow woodturner Chris Ashton made his first wood goblet (pictured right) while on a woodturning course in France. Of course when you learn a new skill or technique, you must practice so he made the goblet pictured below.

As you can see in the pictures, the stem on these wood goblets features a barley twist which I think ties the cup and base together nicely.

Neither Chris or I am sure what wood was used in the first wood goblet, but the second example is made from Bubinga (Guibourtia Demeusei) from Cameroon. The heartwood has this light red/brown colour with pink or red stripes.

Until I saw this wood goblet being turned, I always wondered how a barley twist was made. The short answer is by hand with a Microplane so take a look our step by step guide on how to make a barley twist.
