Camphor Wood
(Cinnamomum Camphora) The Camphor tree from South East Asia is a member of the Laurel family. The wood contains beautiful patterns which finishes well highlighting the different colours of the timber. Camphor wood has a pungent smell and its yellowish wood, sometimes with red striping makes it particularly suitable for carving, furniture and woodturning.
Castello Boxwood
(Gossy Piospermum Praecox)This timber from Brazil bears a light yellow to almost white color. There is little distinction between heartwood and sapwood. Its fine texture and straight grain makes it a dream wood for turning particularly if a high gloss finish is desired.
Chakte Coke
(Cosmocalyx Spectabilis) This tree found in Mexico grows to a medium size producing a dark color with a red hint. This timber is often used for fine furniture and craft items.
Chakte Vega
(Guilindia Sp) Also from Mexico, this timber is believed to resist termites. The wood with it's orange-red colour is particularly popular for segmented turning where its colour adds interest among lighter woods.
Cherry
(Prunus Avium) Cherry wood is often used for furniture making and decorative veneers. Cherry wood pipes are popular with smokers. Cherry is also used for making house signs, flooring and of course woodturning. The wood polishes well but you will need sharp tools as Cherry is known to blunt them.
Cocobolo
(Dalbergia Retusa) A medium size tree from Mexico, Cocobolo can grow to 60 feet, its bright orange to deep red heartwood surrounded by white sapwood. The wood is used for instrument making, jewellery and woodturning. This timber can be harmful to health.
Coolibah Burr
(Eucalyptus Intertexta) Eucalyptus Intertexta from Australia grows particulary in New South Wales with fine examples found in Witjira National Park. The wood itself is difficult to turn and is therefore best avoided by novice woodturners.
Curapay
(Anadenanthera Macrocarpa) Grown in Paraguay this wood is difficult to saw. In fact it is said that this wood is so dense, it will not float in water or burn on a fire. That's just as well as this wood is wonderful for woodturning. It darkens when exposed to a dark red to brown colour with streaks that appear almost black. Popular with fine furniture makers and woodturners.
