Lignum Vitae
(Guaiacum Sanctum) A small tree from Mexico growing to a height of 9 metres, the heartwood varies from dark green to almost ebony with a pale sapwood which is as hard as the heartwood. Difficult to saw and not easy to work with. Its self lubricating nature means it is used in the marine industry.
London Plane
(Platanus Hybrida) A park land tree from the United Kingdom which grows well in cities. Reddish brown heartwood is not easily distinguished from the sapwood. The timber is used for cabinet making, joinery, veneer and of course, woodturning where it makes bowls of a particularly pleasing appearance.
