Satine Bloodwood
(Brosinum Paraense) A very hard wood from Brazil offering a variety of red colours with stripes. This timber will take the edge off your tools but is worth the effort, giving a very high gloss finish but beware the wood is heat sensitive.
Serpentwood
(Pithecolobium Racemosum) Pale brown heartwood with much darker stripes make this wood particularly striking. Some highly figured bowl blanks can be found and are worth searching for. A very decorative wood, it is used for inlays and woodturning where it works great on the lathe.
Snakewood
(Brosimum Aubletti) A very rare tree found in French Guiana, the heartwood looks like snake skin and is sometimes spotted. A red brown colour with black stripes, buy ready cut bowl blanks as this very hard wood blunts saw blades quickly. Used for small jewellry and decorative items in addition to musical instruments and woodturning.
Steamed Pear
(Pyrus Communis) This European tree is light brown with a hint of pink. Used for carving and furniture, it is a very easy wood to work on the lathe making it perfect for the novice woodturner.
Sycamore Fiddleback
(Acer Pseudoplatanus) This tree grows up to 35 metres high in the United Kingdom with heartwood of a creamy colour. This is an easy wood to turn, with plentiful supply making it a favorite with UK woodturners.
